My controversial take: tourists > travelers (here's why)

Aloha Reader!

When people ask what I do for a living, I often get puzzled looks when I say I'm a Professional Tourist.

"Professional Tourist? Isn't that just a fancy way of saying you take a lot of vacations?"

I get it. It sounds like a contradiction. But here's the thing – being a Professional Tourist is exactly what has allowed me to become a trusted Hawaii expert and help thousands of families plan amazing Hawaii vacations.

What "Professional Tourist" Actually Means

There's this idea in travel circles that being a "tourist" is somehow inferior to being a "traveler." I completely disagree.

I proudly call myself a Professional Tourist because I believe in owning what you are. When I visit Hawaii, I am an outsider looking in. I'm not pretending to be local or acting like I'm discovering secrets that no one else knows about.

What makes me Professional is the intentionality behind my travel:

🗓️ Strategic Planning: Every trip has a purpose – whether that's discovering family-friendly activities, testing restaurant recommendations, or diving deep into Hawaiian culture.

📝 Systematic Documentation: I take notes on everything. How long did it take to get to that beach? Were the facilities clean? Was there shade for kids? All of this becomes valuable information for families.

🔍 The Testing Mindset: I approach each experience as a researcher. Is this luau worth the money for families? Can you really see sea turtles at this beach, or is it just marketing hype?

🤝 Building Relationships: Over 40+ visits, I've built relationships with local guides, restaurant owners, and activity operators. This helps me recommend authentic experiences that support local communities.

How This Benefits YOUR Family

After 40+ visits using this Professional Tourist approach, here's what I can offer your family:

Tested Recommendations: Every suggestion comes from personal experience, not just online research

Kid-Friendly Focus: I understand what works for real families with real kids (including meltdowns and nap schedules!)

Cultural Sensitivity: My hula background helps me recommend experiences that respect Hawaiian traditions

Mistake Prevention: I've made the errors so you don't have to – like trying to cram too much into one day or choosing the wrong accommodation type

The Professional Tourist Advantage

The next time someone asks what the difference is between a tourist and a traveler, I'll tell them this: Professional Tourists approach travel with intention, respect, and expertise – then share that knowledge to help others.

Whether you're planning your first family trip to Hawaii or your fifth, consider adopting some Professional Tourist principles:

  1. Plan with Purpose – What do you want to achieve?
  2. Research Beyond Highlights – Look at practical considerations too
  3. Document Your Experience – Take notes for next time
  4. Embrace Flexibility – Plans change, and that's okay
  5. Think Like a Local – Respect the place you're visiting

After all, Hawaii deserves more than casual tourism. It deserves professional-level respect, planning, and appreciation.

Aloha Reader! I'm just going to be upfront with you: Hawaii is not cheap, and the numbers have gone up. If you've been Googling "how much does a Hawaii trip cost" and getting estimates that feel surprisingly low, it's probably because those articles are using old data. Here's what the realistic picture looks like for a family of four in summer 2026. Flights This is where a lot of families get sticker shock. The old benchmark of $450 to $900 per person roundtrip that you'll still see in a lot...

Aloha Reader! I got a version of this question a lot in February: "We have 10 days in Hawaii. Should we do one island or two?" Sometimes it's "should we do Maui or Oahu for our first trip." Sometimes it's "we really want to see both but we're not sure we have enough time." The wording changes but the underlying question is the same. How do we make sure we're making the right call on something this big? Here's the honest answer: it depends, and the things it depends on are really specific to...

Aloha Reader! Here's something I wish more families knew before they started planning: the activities are not something you figure out once you get there. The good ones sell out. Sometimes months out. And finding out your must-do luau has no availability for your dates is a really deflating moment when you're excited about a trip. So let's talk about what to book, when to book it, and a couple of things to watch out for. Before anything else, check the fine print. If anyone in your family...
