Aloha Reader, On Saturday I fly to Kauaʻi with my 10-year-old and my mom. The snacks are packed. The clothes are more of a suggestion at this point. Kauaʻi was the first Hawaiian island I ever visited, and it still feels a little like coming home. I always swing by Mark's Place to get takeout if I land on a weekday. It's also the island families ask me about most, usually right after they realize it's trickier to plan than it looks. The highway doesn't go all the way around, so the North Shore and the West Side sit at opposite ends of a long drive. The weather can be completely different an hour apart. And some of the places everyone wants to see need a reservation or a backup plan. That's why I made my Kauaʻi travel guide. It's a seven-day itinerary with daily schedules, kid-friendly activities, family resort picks, a packing list, and an interactive map you can download. It's built to be flexible, so you can shuffle days around the weather instead of fighting it. That flexibility matters more than usual right now. The Waimea Canyon Lookout reopened on October 24, but the rest of Waimea Canyon State Park and all of Kōkeʻe State Park are still closed after Hurricane Lowell. If your trip is coming up soon, plan a quick stop at the lookout and fill the rest of that day with the south shore or an extra beach day. Check the state parks site before you go. Hāʻena on the North Shore is open again with a reservation. It's the same plan I send friends when they ask how to do Kauaʻi without wearing everyone out. The guide is digital and lands in your inbox right away. Aloha, Marcie P.S. If you'd rather have a printed copy to flip through on the plane, it's on Amazon. |

Aloha Reader, In less than a week I'll be on Kauaʻi with my son and my mom, so I've been watching the island news closely. After a hard hurricane season, October brought some good updates, and I wanted to make sure you saw them. Hāʻena State Park on Kauaʻi's North Shore reopened on October 15. It had been closed since September 6, when Hurricane Lowell was on its way. The shuttle is running again, and the day hike out to Hanakāpīʻai Beach and Hanakāpīʻai Falls is open. Out-of-state visitors...
Aloha Reader, There is something funny about Halloween in Hawaiʻi. Mainland Halloween means sweaters, cold noses, and bundling costumes under coats. In Hawaiʻi, you might be trick-or-treating in a costume and slippers with the trade winds blowing. If your family happens to be on the islands this week, you are in for a treat. Each island celebrates in its own way. There are pumpkin patches and fall festivals, keiki costume events at shopping centers, and haunted houses for older kids who want...
Aloha Reader, and happy Aloha Friday! A few weeks ago I asked for the one thing we shouldn't miss on Kauaʻi. You didn't hold back. I've read every reply, and tomorrow they're getting on the plane with me. Here are a few favorites. Vanessa, who I helped with early planning, took her multi-generation family to Kauaʻi and the Big Island in June. Her kids called it the best trip they've ever been on. Her list is pure kid joy. Musubi from The Musubi Truck. Shave ice from JoJo's, which they loved...
